Government says it will be considering an upward review of the newly restored teacher trainee allowance from the current 400 cedis to about 500 cedis.

Government in the 2013/2014 academic year scrapped the payment of monthly allowance of GH¢452 to the trainees; something that generated hue and cry among trainees and some parents, and criticized by the then Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party.

Nana Akufo-Addo, the then presidential candidate of the NPP promised to restore the allowance together with that of trainee nurses, if voted into office.

In fulfillment of the promise, the government announced in August 2017 that it will from October that year begin giving each trainee GH¢400, from which GH¢196 will used to pay for trainees’ utilities.

The amount is, however, GH¢248 less than the GH¢452 the trainees were receiving after deductions before the allowance was scrapped

At the a ceremony to officially launched the reintroduced trainee allowance, executives of the Teacher Training Association of Ghana appealed to the government to increase the amount.

Dr. Bawumia in response said government would give the request consideration and ensure it is either increased to GHC450 or GHC500.

He assured that the trainee allowance has come to stay, indicating that government will introduce incentives to make the teaching profession more attractive.

“The restoration of the teacher trainee allowance is the first step on the road to ensuring that the teacher enjoys the exulted status it enjoyed in times past. With your help we shall make this happen,” he said.
