We Must All Support the President To Make Accra Clean

IT has been our strong expectation that Accra will be a clean city befitting the status of a national capital. But, that is not and has not been the case for several years now.

THE saddest thing is that various parts of our national capital are not only dirty but stink as well, a major cause of which has been attributed to our attitudes. Our attitudes towards the environment have been nothing but shameful.

ON a daily basis residents in Accra are seen in broad daylight throwing sachets of what has come to be known as pure water anywhere they deem fit without any recourse of the negative impact of their action. Sadly, some have even cultivated the habit of dumping collected refuse from their homes into the gutters and the drains anytime it is raining.

THE sight of many of our beaches in Accra is nothing to write home about. Open defection has been the common practice at several of our beaches. Our city authorities have also been blamed for the dirt in Accra.

THEIR lack of enforcing the sanitation by-laws and instituting punitive actions against offending residents has contributed largely to the filth in Accra. It is therefore, not surprising that anytime there is flood in parts of Accra, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) most often is blamed for it. This is because they are key in ensuring that Accra experiences minimum or no floods at all.

IT is against this backdrop that Today calls on all of us to support President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s pledge to make Accra the cleanest city on the continent by the end of his four-year tenure (2020).

“THE commitment we are making and which I want you all to make with me is that by the time we end our four-year term, Accra is going to be the cleanest city in Africa,” the President assured.

THE President made this commitment in an address after he had been installed a chief by the people of Jamestown and Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council. This is one important promise that we want to see the President fulfill.

INDEED this is not the first time we have had a President state that he will ensure Accra is kept clean. Additionally, various measures have been tried by different administrations all in the name of making Accra clean, but did not achieve the desired objective.

THEREFORE, as the President has made this promise of making Accra clean by 2020, it is imperative that we all do our bit to make this dream come true. After all, a clean and healthy Accra will inure immensely not only to Ghanaians but the entire nation.
