US Embassy In Ghana Cautions Its Citizens Ahead of GFPF Demo

A demonstration alert dated March 27, 2018 on the website of the US Embassy in Ghana has cautioned US citizens to among other safety measures “avoid the areas of the demonstrations” it outlined to have  started yesterday March 27.

According to the statement, as at 18:00 Tuesday March 27, there was an ongoing demonstration around the Ghana Police Headquarters area, right through to the the Ring Road and the Independence junction in Accra.

“Demonstrations expected to take place on Wednesday, March 28 2018, beginning after 06:00am. The Ghana First Patriotic Front (GFPF) intends to protest the Parliament’s approval of the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) between the United States and Ghana. Approximately 200 demonstrators are expected”, it further stated.

The Ghana First Patriotic Front (GFPF) had galvanized support from interest groups including the Minority in Parliament to stage a demonstration Wednesday morning in protest to the US-Ghana Defence Cooperation Agreement.

The agreement which was ratified by parliament on March 23 under some controversial circumstances would allow the US to establish what many have deemed military base in the country.

The US Embassy thus cautioned its citizens in Ghana to avoid the areas of the demonstrations, the crowd, and exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.

The Embassy further cautioned its citizens to be aware of their surroundings, as well as monitor local media for updates and keep a low profile.
