“To me, the most important aspect of all this is the need for various councils or governing councils of the university, which have for the past several months haven’t been constituted to be constituted as soon as possible.”

Professor Kwesi Yankah made this known on Monday after a closed-door meeting with the University’s authorities.

He also met the local leadership of the University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the Winneba campus.

He expressed government’s unhappiness about the recent shutdown of the university.

According to him, UEW must wait patiently for the verdict that the court will give, advising that it can still pursue the case if not satisfied with final judgement.

A Winneba High Court on Friday, June 16 was equally not happy with the shutdown as it claimed it was the Vice Chancellor and some senior members who were barred from working.

The school was subsequently opened for academic work.

Prof Yankah said: “Now that the case is in court things should not be done in a way that disrupts proceedings…The University [of Education] has so many campuses so the shutdown of one campus is a shutdown of the entire system”.

“We have met [the university authorities and UTAG] and they have spoken their minds. They have stated their position on the issue. We have listened to them and we have prevailed on them to come together with us and wait for the verdict or decision of the court.”

He assured parents and past students that there is no cause for alarm.

When approached, the local leadership of UTAG said it is yet to come out with a statement on their decision of not going back to work.
