UEW Brouhaha: UTAG Charges CJ To Probe Matter

Some members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), have urged the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, to probe what happened in court on June 13, 2017 concerning the university to redeem its image.

According to them, the recent court injunction slapped on the university was bastardising and having serious implications on the university as students were no more interested in coming to school.

“People are taking advantage to remove and replace illegally which is shamefully breeding chaos and bringing the name of the university into disrepute,” he stated.

Addressing a public forum to set the records straight after the shocking shutdown of the university at Winneba last Wednesday, the Principal of the College of Languages Education at the Ajumako Campus, Prof. Avea S. Nsoh, stated that the university has been pulled down with regard to what happened.

“The court also ordered that the Pro-Vice Chancellor who contested the Vice Chancellor (VC) position and lost should act as VC until the governing council is reconstituted but strangely he was sworn in as acting VC before the council became council contrary to the statutes and acts of the university,” he pointed out.

He expressed worry about the seeming suppression of the rights of some senior members of the academia on campus due to the stance they have taken on the issue, adding that activities in the university have gone slow and have not been able to pick up since the court injunction.

“This is creating academic insecurity on campus because now there is a sharp rift between those in support of the Acting VC and the Pro-VC,” he revealed.

“Students are confused, alumni are worried and the whole nation is worried because of this development.  We cannot keep silent anymore hence this move to bring people up to speed with the actual facts,” Prof. Nsoh added.

He slammed the MP for the area, Lawyer Alex Afenyo-Markin, for using the media to distort the real facts surrounding the issue and charged the CJ to take up the issue to ensure sanity returns to the campus.

Lecturers on the Ajumako and Winneba Campus of the university have therefore decided to go on strike until further notice to remedy the situation.
