This was disclosed by the Municipal Chief Executive of the Keta Municipal Assembly, Elliot Edem Agbenorwu.

Communities like Blekusu, Adina, Agorko and adjoining communities were hit with heavy tidal waves over the weekend.

This has displaced many and disrupting academic calendar in some schools.

This current situation has forced the residents in the affected area to make an urgent call on the central government through the Municipal Assembly for an immediate resettlement.

Elliot Edem Agbenorwu told Bright Kwesi Asempa on Onua FM morning show ‘Yen Nsem Pa’ that residents in the affected communities have decided to voluntarily relocate but asking for assistance from the government.

He said there are close to 200 houses that have been affected with the inhabitants losing properties running into several millions of Ghana cedis.

“It’s been happening every time, but this year’s has been very severe and I understand it has even affected some parts of Togo,” he said.

The MCE further said that the residents believe the relocation would help them to live a more peaceful life, as support from government will go a long way to help them to recoup some of the losses they have suffered as a result of the tidal wave.

He, however, added that NADMO officials have visited the community to assess the situation and have also brought in some relief items, which would be distributed very soon.

Meanwhile, fisherfolks in Keta and Mfantseman municipalities in the Volta and Central regions respectively have also been badly affected by the tidal wave, losing canoes, outboard motors and fishing nets.

In case of the Keta municipality, MCE Seth Ayormewu said the fisherfolks cannot go back to sea because they have lost everything and getting them back involves a lot, adding that the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Elizabeth Naa Afoley, has promised to meet with the affected fisherfolks and see how to meet them half way.

On his part, MCE for Mfantseman Kenneth Asuman explained that he has toured the affected communities, together with the MP for Ekumfi, Francis Kingsley Ato Cudjoe, who doubles as the deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, to assess the situation.

He, therefore, called for support from corporate bodies to help put the victims back to business.

“We are going to speak to MASLOC to see if they could help because the fishermen have lost substantial amount of money and some items,” he promised.
