Magufuli Rape Pardon – Tanzanian President John Magufuli is currently in hot soup for granting pardon to a father/son team of child rapists that had served thirteen years of a life sentence for raping children.

No, it didn’t just occur once, Singer Nguza Viking, known as Babu Seya, and his son Johnson Nguza, known as Papii Kocha, were pardoned for raping 10 primary schoolgirls in the Tanzanian city Dar es Salaam.

This is also coming from a President who banned pregnant young girls from going to school. The president selected a group of prisoners to be released, who he said had corrected their behavior.

The two rapists were included in the list and the whole world is reacting to this. The Magufuli rape pardon has led to an outrage in the media with many activists coming forward to condemn the president’s leniency on a deplorable act of rape.

According to a child rights activist, Kate McAlpine who spoke to BBC, Magufuli’s actions showed “a lack of understanding about violence against children”.

Kate McAlpine also linked this latest speech to his June announcement where he banned pregnant schoolgirls from returning to school.

Earlier in June, President Magufuli said that pregnant girls should not be allowed to go back to school after they deliver, arguing that they would not be able to concentrate. According to him, they are no longer girls but mothers and should be allowed to enjoy free education meant for children.

Magufuli also backed his stands with the argument that if such girls were allowed back into school, it would only encourage others to engage in pre-marital sex.

For a president who strongly makes this decree, what could be the best possible explanation for his pardon of child rapists? This has been the perturbing question asked on various platforms in the wake of Magufuli’s child rapists pardon.

McAlpine was quoted by BBC as saying that the Tanzanian President has a blind spot when it comes to recognizing children as victims. “Pregnant schoolgirls are pregnant because they are victims of violence,” she said.
