Support Us, We’ll Follow Due Process In Koku Anyidoho’s Case

The Ghana Police say it will follow due process in the matter of the NDC firebrand Koku Anyidoho, who is alleged to have made treasonable comments that resulted in his arrest on Tuesday, March 27.

“The Police Administration assures the public that it will follow due process in the investigation of the offence suspected to have been committed by Mr. Anyidoho,” it said in a statement Wednesday.

Anyidoho who is the deputy general secretary of the National Democratic Congress has been in police custody in the last 24 hours assisting in investigations.

Speaking on Accra-based Happy FM, Anyidoho suggested there would be ‘civil revolt’ and ‘civilian coup d’état’ in the country from Wednesday, March 28.

“Somebody should tell Nana Akufo- Addo, [massa], history has a very interesting way of repeating itself, on the 13th of January 1972, a certain Colonel Ignatius Kuntu Achampong led an insurrection that removed t e progress party from power; Busia was the prime minister, Akufo-Addo’s father was the ceremonial president. Somebody should tell Nana Akufo-Addo that history has an interesting way of repeating itself, ” he said.

Asked whether he meant there would be a coup d’état in Ghana, the deputy general secretary responded: “As for me I have said it [translated], history has an interesting way of repeating itself”.

He was subsequently arrested Tuesday afternoon while he and some NDC executives were addressing a news conference on the controversial Ghana-US defence agreement, and taken to the Police CID headquarters where he has since been in custody.

Anyidoho was Tuesday night cautioned on the offences of causing alarm and fear and treason felony after almost eight hours of interrogation.

The Police on Wednesdayt, March 28 issued a statement to set the record straight on the arrest and subsequent detention of NDC firebrand who is likely to be put before court on Thursday in line with 48 hours constitutional provision.

Below is the chronology of events as told b y the Police

The Police Administration has taken note of the high public interest following the arrest of Mr. Koku Anyidoho by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters yesterday 27th March. 208. In view of this, we wish to clarify the facts of his arrest and investigation as follows:

a. Police Officers were dispatched to the International Press Centre to arrest Mr. Anyidoho, who by statement and conduct has published statements likely to cause fear and alarm to the public and also endeavoured to carry out by unlawful means an enterprise which usurps t. executive power of Ghana.

b. The suspect was brought to the CID Headquarters by the arresting officers and a search was subsequently conducted at his residence in his presence and that of his Lawyer.

c. The suspect has since been cautioned on offences related to causing fear and alarm and treason felony and is in custody pending further investigation.

The Police Administration assures the public that it will follow due process in the investigation of the offence suspected to have been committed by Mr. Anyidoho. The public is therefore urged to remain calm and support Police in the discharge of our duties.
