Parliament has strongly advised the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation(GNPC) to stop involving itself in activities outside its core mandate of matters related to oil exploration.
The legislature specifically made reference to GNPC’s sponsorship to the Black Stars and handing out funds to certain state entities.
The recommendation by the House follows discussions on Thursday concerning the report from the Public Account Committee in relation to how GNPC managed revenues from ventures into oil exploration in 2015.
The PIAC report disclosed that GNPC provided financial assistance to Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) as well as Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), a commitment outside its remit.
“The Committee holds the view that GNPC should stick its core mandate. It, therefore, recommends that GNPC should stay away from all activities that do not come under its core function,” Chairman of the Finance Committee, Dr Mark Assibey Yeboah, noted while reading the Finance Committee’s recommendation on the PIAC report.
GNPC, headline sponsor of the Black Stars have been committing an amount of $3million annually as sponsorship package to the senior national team since 2013.
