The Human Capital, and Marketing and Communications units of Stanbic Bank have extended a hand of support to the La Yahoushua Primary School in Accra in commemoration of this year’s Nelson Mandela Day.

The Bank donated items worth GH¢8000 to the school pupils and also pledged to provide periodic support for the school. The items donated were books, pens and insecticide treated mosquito nets. Staff volunteers of the unit also spent the day mentoring the students on how to focus on their studies and live exemplary lives.

The Nelson Mandela International Day was instituted by the United Nation General Assembly on July 18, 2009, in remembrance of the lifetime service that Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa, Africa and the world.

According to Head of Human Capital, Stanbic Bank, Samuel Teye, they take inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s fight for liberation from social and economic oppression and his love of education as a weapon of change.

“We celebrate the life and achievement of this great global icon of peace and his respect for humanity,” he said.  “To this end, Stanbic has been using the celebration of Mandela Day as a platform for supporting educational initiatives in Ghana as we believe in the power of education to move society forward. Our support for La Yehoushua Primary School, is not a one-off donation. This is the beginning of a relationship that going forward would see us provide a range of support that would include mentorship for the pupils.”

Headmistress, Mrs. Kate Downya, expressed gratitude to Stanbic Bank for showing interest in her school.

“Though La Yehoushua Primary School is located in an elite community, we lack some basic tools for learning,” she said. “Stanbic Bank is the first corporate body to have ever donated to the school. I would like to encourage others to come on board to emulate this gesture and come to the aid of these brilliant but needy children.”

She was optimistic that the learning materials will help provide a sound footing for the pupils of the school in the next academic term.

As part of Standard Bank Group, the largest African Banking Group by assets, with a heritage of over 150 years, Stanbic Bank is committed to creating prosperity and giving back to the people of Ghana.

The bank provides social support in education, entrepreneurship and health and wellness. In addition to encouraging staff initiated community involvement programmes, the bank supports community based educational funds in its areas of operation. Some projects undertaken in the area of education over the years include the donation of computers and learning materials, refurbishment of some learning centres and the adoption of some special schools.
