This was revealed by the President when he spoke at the launch of the restored allowances on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. Some Ghana’s nurse-trainees have started receiving their monthly allowances as promised by the ruling government.

Akufo-Addo revealed that about 58, 000 health trainees comprising nurses and midwives will be paid a monthly allowance of Gh¢400 each during the 2017 and 2018 academic year.

The restoration which was part of the promises made to Ghanaians during the 2016 electioneering, Nana Addo explained, will be fulfilled to the fullest with proper management of government’s finances.

In 2014, the government of former president John Mahama canceled the payment of all allowances, including that of nursing trainees’.

The NDC government explained their reason to be that, trainee allowances scale down the number of students granted admission into institutions, as trainee institutions are given a quota.

This according to the NDC, was in other for the government not to exceed the stipulated allocation, of trainee allowances.

However, the move was met with massive protests by teacher and nursing trainees across the country. But the NPP bought the hearts of Ghanaians with their message of change; which included restoring the trainee allowances.

The NPP used the subject as one of the bedrocks of its campaign, assuring it would restore the scrapped nursing and teacher trainee allowances, three months after it assumed office.

The NPP government has now fulfilled her promises and the beneficiaries can’t help but sing their praises.

The Conference of Heads of Health Training Institutions (COHHETI) has thanked the government for restoring the scrapped nursing trainee allowances.

President of COHHETI, Josephine Ansu-Gyeabour who also spoke at the launch hailed the government for upholding its campaign pledge. She also urged the government to ensure that the restoration of the allowances cover all the basic health training institutions.
