A retired military officer, Major Osahene Boakye Gyan, has appealed to the general public to delink politics from security issues in the country.
According to him, there is the need to go beyond politics to have a critical and holistic approach towards security in the country as a way of ensuring the safety of Ghanaians.
His comments follow the gruesome murder of Captain Maxwell Mahama by an angry mob at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region on suspicion that he was an armed robber on Monday 29 May, when a group of people he asked directions from spotted a pistol on him.
Speaking with Chief Jerry Forson on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Friday June 2, Major Boakye Gyan, who was a spokesperson for the defunct Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), said: “I am very sad that this has happened because it could have been anybody. There have been attacks on the law courts, on police officers who are supposed to enforce the law, and now on the…military. But this not political football, we should not play politics with it. We need to handle this matter holistically.”
He added: “The…attack on them has reduced their morale so we must quickly empower them to behave as our security officers without any interference from politicians.”
