he Sewia D/A 1 Primary School in the Bosomtwe district of the Ashanti Region has been closed down by the Ghana Education Service (GES) due to the use of the school’s classrooms as a place of convenience by some residents.

The school was shut down Tuesday, May 23 after it recorded another case of defecation despite several warnings and threats by the GES.

The school, which forms part of the Sewia Cluster of Schools, has from last year been recording several cases of defecation in its classrooms over which the District Director of Education held several meetings with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) to find a solution.

The PTA was then forced to hire the services of watchmen after the volunteer group set up by the community failed to solve the menace.

The pupils and teachers last Monday morning were greeted by excrement deposited in two classrooms, forcing the closure of the school. Though the school has two separate toilet facilities, the offenders prefer easing themselves in the classrooms.

When Adehye FM visited the school, pupils of Sewia D/A 1 Primary School were roaming about as the classrooms were being locked with faeces deposited in some of the classrooms not cleared.

Some of the pupils who could not attend school following the closure, in an interview with Adehye News’ Owoahene Addai Mununkum and Elisha Adarkwa, appealed for the reopening of the school.

According to them, they were only told to go home on Tuesday as their classrooms were filled with faeces.

“We have been told to come back to school when we hear of the announcement of the reopening of the school,” a pupil said.

Adehye News also discovered that the use of cannabis in the community is on the rise as children as young as 14 were involved in smoking it.

Meanwhile, the PTA Chairman of the school, Pastor Andrew Peprah, described the menace as unfortunate and a dent on the image of the community but promised to make sure the school is reopened as soon as the classrooms are cleaned up.
