The commissioning of the south leg of the 33-kilometer Kwafokrom-Apedwa road and the Suhum bypass has been postponed.
The Minister of Roads, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, who was expected to commission the section of the road on Wednesday, cancelled it after concerns of safety were raised by residents.
Officials from the Ghana Highway Authority, journalists, contractors and residents waited for the arrival of the minister from 3pm Wednesday till 9:15 pm.
While waiting, a handful of the residents raised concerns the road wasn’t fully completed with safety measures not adequate, putting pedestrians including children at risk.
“We are afraid for our kids,” a young mother, Mary, said.
“We have to guide them cross daily to school. We fear for their lives.”
“The accidents on the road in the past four months have been scary for us,” Mary’s sister, Mercy told us.
When the Roads Minister and his entourage arrived, he had to do some consultations.
He later called off the commission.
“I’m okay with the road but we cannot put people’s lives in danger. We are postponing the commission to next two weeks.”
The Suhum-Apedwa dual carriage road was awarded in 2008 for 3 years and three months.
