Attorney General and Minister of Justice Gloria Afua Akuffo has revealed that before emplaning for Hamburg, Germany for the judgement on the Ghana-Ivory Coast maritime dispute, she prayed together with her predecessor Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong.

She said she had called the former minister “and we said a prayer together”.

The two have been lauded for teaming up in an unusual fashion to chalk that historic victory for Ghana.

Mrs Appiah-Oppong started it all for Ghana in 2014 when the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) began sitting on the dispute.

The change of government in 2017 saw a change in the leadership of Ghana’s team as Ms Akuffo took over from Mrs Appiah-Oppong.

The two had visited ITLOS together on February 6, 2017, when Ghana began its oral argument over the disputed boundary.

Though the former AG was absent on the final day of ruling, Justice Minister Akuffo says: “Marietta and I speak every now and then”.

“And perhaps, I should make it public that the night when we emplaned to go for the ruling, before I emplaned I called Marietta and we said a prayer together.”

She, however, observed that a lot of work has to be done though ruling was in the favour of Ghana.

On Thursday, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo hosted a dinner in honour of Ghana’s legal team.

“It was the co-operative effort of all of them that secured the famous result of 23rd September, 2017, for our country,” the president said at the dinner, which had in attendance former government functionaries.

“I am glad to see that several of the foreign lawyers have been able to join us for this brief ceremony.”
