President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has appointed former Chief Justice, Georgina Wood unto the Council of State. This is in accordance with Article 89(2)(a)(i). This section of the Ghanaian Constitution mandates that “one person who has previously held the office of Chief Justice” be appointed to serve on the Council of State.
Mrs Wood’s appointment was announced in Parliament on Thursday by the Speaker, Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye. She will join other members of the Council of State including; Juabenhene Nana Otuo Siriboe II, Sam Okudzeto, Nana Kofi Obiri Egyir II, Stanley Adjiri Blankson, Mrs Alberta Cudjoe, Alhaji Aminu Amadu, Dr Margaret Amoakohene, Alhaji Sahanun Moqtar, Mrs Georgina Kusi, Alhaji Sule Yiremiah, and Mr Paa Kofi Ansong.
The President had earlier sworn-in 24 members of the Council of State, leaving one last seat which per Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, was supposed to be occupied by “one person who has previously held the office of Chief Justice” pursuant to approval of Parliament. But at the time the 24 were being sworn-in, there was no living former Chief Justice, according to the nomination notice read by the Speaker.
Former CJ Wood will be replaced by another woman, Justice Sophia Akuffo, who would be vetted by Parliament on Monday, June 19.
NDC Nearly Forced Me to Resign Under Mills -Georgina Wood
Georgina Wood earlier indicated that elements in the former Atta Mills government put pressure on her to resign but she managed to succeed in office due to prayer and supplication from families and friends. The retired Justice revealed this during a Thanksgiving Service to celebrate her 70th birthday, at the Ringway Assemblies of God church in Accra.
Mrs Wood said that members in the late John Evans Atta Mills government constantly pressured her to step down because she was appointed by former President John Agyekum Kufuor. According to her, it was only prayers and support from relatives and colleagues that gave her the fortitude to carry on.
