Prez Inaugurates Ghana International Trade Commission

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated a five-member board for the Ghana International Trade Commission(GITC).

The board is expected to promote and enhance the competitiveness of  trade locally and internationally within acceptable standards.

The inauguration ceremony which took place at the Jubilee House on Wednesday April 4, saw the President name Nana Adu Gyamfi as Board Chairman together with other members including, Sophia Korko, Professor Paul kurkuk, Philip Jude Mensah, and  Arnold Tetteh Okai as the first members of the board.

In his speech, the President indicated the inauguration of the board was in line with government’s  ‘Ghana beyond aid agenda’.

“We want our relations with other nations, within and outside of the continent to be characterized by an increase in trade and investment cooperation and trade and not aid,” President Akufo-Addo said.

The President also said such relations and cooperation will add value to the Ghana’s products and consequently  inure to the benefit of the nation by creating jobs.

“We believe this is the way to develop healthy relations and put Ghanaian products in the highest realm of the value chain in the global market place, and thereby create jobs for the teeming masses of Ghanaians particularly the youth”

He further said the role of the Ghana International Trade Commission is critical to his government for the realization of their vision for the country.

The President said the board will among other things recommend to government tariff levels for specific sectors of the economy.

The paramount responsibility of the commission the President noted, will be to work against dumping which he says  will  help strengthen the ability of domestic producers to satisfy the domestic market.

President Akufo-Addo charged the board to ensure that Ghana conforms to the rules and regulations governing the world trade system.

The President also noted that the implementation of the continental free area agreement signed in Rwanda coupled with the anticipated population growth in the continent will bring some prosperity to the continent in the area of trade.

Speaking on behalf of the board, the Chairman, Nana Adu Gyamfi, thanked the president for the appointment and expressed their readiness to uphold the ideals of the commission by delivering on the mandate trusted them.

“We are mindful and energized by the tremendous volume of workload involved, and we know we have work to do”, he said.
