Addressing the media Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at the Flagstaff House in Accra, the President observed corruption in the public sector is the greatest threat to the nation, noting a law will soon be in place to fight the menace.

“And when it comes to wrongdoings of the kind that indeed cause the nation the greatest harm-corrupt public officials. I’m glad to say the office of the special prosecutor will be with us shortly.

“The bill has currently been gazetted and will in parliament during this meeting. We all, in and outside parliament short take an interest in the rapid passage of this law which will serve us all,” he said.

Nana Addo and the NPP had made a campaign promise to establish a special prosecutor’s office to handle cases of corruption and they have since the assumption of office been working to the establishment of that office.

The president cautioned all public servants in his government to be mindful of the fact that they are in government to serve the public interest and not their individual parochial interests.

“I’m sticking to my word that those who will serve in my government must protect and not abusive the public purse and must at all times recognize that they’re in service not for private gains but for public service,” he cautioned.

He again reminded all government appointees to declare their assets as required by law so as to make for transparent governance citing himself and his vice as examples.

“I have declared my assets within two weeks of my inauguration and so has my vice, the ministers have declared their assets and I’m insisting that all those required to do so under the must comply,” he said.

This is the first time President Akufo-Addo has met the press after 6 months in office.

He intends to continue this exercise of meeting the media twice in a year. He touched on issues ranging from economy, security, agriculture, local governance, corruption and other sensitive areas of his government.
