However, Ghana’s disappointing exhibition did not gain much prominence as there was another interesting side to the outcome -Policeman Sarfo’s debut at the Black Stars.

Samuel Sarfo, a Constable with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service made his dream Ghana debut as a second-half substitute in the 2-1 defeat to the USA on Saturday. Sarfo, who plays for Liberty Professionals, was itching to play his first match for the Black Stars after earning a debut call-up for 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Ethiopia, June 11, 2017.

This was after less than two years of working as a policeman for the team. The 26-year-old was an amateur footballer with local amateur side, Liberty Professionals FC.

Facts to Know About Sarfo’s Move to Black Stars

Less than two years ago, Sarfo was a policeman playing amateur football and regularly stationed to protect members of the Balck Stars; the Ghanaian national football team. He was one of the policemen deployed to provide security for the Black Stars during the AFCON qualifier against Rwanda in 2016.

Samuel Sarfo had to take the long root to become a professional. The 26-year-old was an amateur footballer with local amateur side, Liberty Professionals FC. Sarfo joined Liberty Professionals and in less than a year he was named the captain in early 2016.

Sarfo is the highest-scoring defender in the Ghana Premier League with 6 goals for Liberty Professionals. In the Ghana Premier League, Sarfo has scored six goals and one assist. Following his performances as well as his duties as a policeman for the national team, the Ghana Football Association paid him a courtesy visit and hailed his dedication to the Ghanaian Premier League.

Samuel Sarfo was called up following the withdrawals of experienced internationals, Alfred Nelson and Daniel Nii Adjei. Following his remarkable performance at Liberty Professionals, he was called up by Coach Kwesi Appiah for the AFCON qualifier Ethiopia.

The policeman cum footballer was introduced in the 81st minute to replace Jerry Akaminko. For the last nine minutes he spent on the pitch, Sarfo showed great composure at the back as he tried to prevent the USA centre-forwards from scoring.

Sarfo expressed his immense pleasure, regarding his call up on the team. The policeman was very pleased with the chance to defend his country in another way.

As for his work as a police officer, Samuel Sarfo will hold on to his previous task of keeping the nation safe in relation to the national team. Sarfo will continue to combine work as a security police officer and a footballer.
