The nomination of district chief executives by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been greeted with protests by some members and supporters of the NPP across the country, with the Northern Region recording some violent protests in some districts.

But speaking on the issue, the Northern Regional Police Commander, ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong, said “demonstrations will not change the mind of the President” hence asked the leadership of the party to talk to the agrieved members

The Regional Police Command on Wednesday arrested 11 supporters of the NPP who burnt car tyres at the Tamale Sports Stadium Roundabout in protest against the President’s nominee the Sagnerigu District.

The Police Command was allegedly forced on Thursday to grant bail to the 11 supporters who were picked up on the evening of Wednesday for engaging in unlawful demonstration.

However, ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong, denied claims that the Police was forced by the Northern Regional Chairman of NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu, to release the 11 suspects.

ACP Adusei Sarpong told Onua FM’s Ghana Dadwene explained that taking the 11 to court would not have calmed the situation or would not have been deterrent enough to prevent others from demonstrating, saying “what shows they would not have disturbed or demonstrated?”.

Meanwhile, he has pleaded with those who failed to get the nomination of the President as distric chief executives to impress on their supporters to calm down.

“Their leaders should talk to them. That is the only thing they should have done. That is what they should do”, ACP Sarpong added.
