In 2015, FIFPro lodged a restraint-of-trade complaint against football’s world governing body -FIFA. This restraint-of-trade complaint frowned upon events where clubs received fees to let go of their players at the end of their contracts.

Experts suggested that the 1995 Bosman ruling should equally be applied in today’s football. In the 1995 Bosman ruling, players could change clubs at the end of their contracts without their old club receiving a fee.

Talks between the pair concerning the changes to the player-contract regulations have been underway for 18 months and have also drawn attention from the media and football lovers.

From the long talks and deliberations, the duo was able to concede that players who are not paid by their clubs or are mistreated by them, will be able to break their contracts and leave.

In addition to this, players who have not been paid for two months, or have been the victim of abusive behaviour, will be able to seek compensation and if those clubs do not comply with a FIFA ruling, they will face a transfer ban.

The joint bodies will also see to the creation of a task force to review the transfer system, starting in January. This will also involve the review of the impact of rocketing transfer fees on the competitive balance between and within leagues, the role of agents, transfer windows, the loan system and squad sizes.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed utmost faith in this new FIFPro-FIFA Deal. President of the football governing body hailed the unprecedented cooperation between FIFA, FIFPro, the European Club Association and the World Leagues Forum. He is also optimistic that the agreement will be beneficial to all.
