Youth of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have embarked violent public disturbances across the country in protest of President Akufo Addo’s nominees to head their Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.
Incensed youth in Tolon, Zebila, Mpohor, Savelugu, Nanton, Sagnarigu hit the streets soon after the announcement Wednesdy afternoon to demonstrate their anger at the choice of the president, arguing that some of the nominees did not actively campaign for then Flagbearer Nana Akufo during the 2016 election, while some other nominees also lack the drive to help the youth.
In some instances MPs in some districts have been accused of pushing through and foisting their favourite candidates on the people.
For instance the MP for Mpohor, Alex Agyekum has been threatened not to step foot in the area, if the President does not revoke the nomination of one Ignatious Asa Mensah, who’s said to have been fielded by the MP as DCE, an accusation the latter has rejected.
Chairman of the MMDCEs Selection Committee, Peter Mac-Manu told Kasapa News he believes his team has done a good job as they held extensive consultation in the period of selection.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo named his remaining 212 persons as Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) on Wednesday.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist have been up in arms over the nominations, condemning some of the president’s decisions against their wish.
But, announcing the names on Wednesday, the Minister for Local Government, Hajia Alima Mahama appealed to party faithful to exercise restraint and give the nominees the needed support to develop their respective areas.
