This comes after the governor commissioned statues of Presidents Ellen Sirleaf of Liberia and Zuma of South Africa. This development has caused a lot of controversy in the state with many chiding the governor for wasting taxpayers monies on ‘frivolities’.

On October 15, Okorocha unveiled Zuma’s gold-cast monument, said to have cost a whopping N520 million drawing intense criticism from critics nationwide.

Citing bad roads, unpaid workers salary and many other shortcomings of his government, a large section of citizens spewed all sorts of verbal attacks on the governor for wasting billions of Nigerian Naira on statues.

For Zuma’s statue, critics wondered whether by so doing Okorocha was celebrating corruption, since Zuma has been found guilty of corruption by courts in South Africa and has been ordered to refund the $500,000.00 stolen from the public treasury to expand his private house to accommodate his many wives.

They also wondered why Okorocha would choose to honor Zuma, ignoring South African anti-apartheid icons, including Nelson Mandela, Oliver Thambo and Walter Sisulu.

But the governor explained that Zuma was in the state principally to sign a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, between the Jacob Zuma Educational Foundation and Rochas Foundation College of Africa.

As if that was not enough, Okorocha’s latest statue, a monument of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia, was unveiled on November 9. Giving further explanations for his actions, Okorocha said he seeks to open the doors of Imo to the rest of the world, for good.

He is now set to launch Nana Addo’s statue and as expected, more criticisms have followed.
