KATH Mother and Baby Unit – The documentary by JoyNews’ SSeth Kwame Boateng highlighting the defects and deteriorating nature of the old facility that led to high rates of maternal and child mortality at the hospital; has seen to the setting up of a complete and gigantic maternity unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo and her Foundation partnered the Multimedia Group Limited worked tirelessly to raise funds in various ways for the success and completion of the project.
The new KATH Mother and Baby Unit has nine birthing beds compared to two in the previous one and an additional theatre has been added to the existing two, making them three. There is also an increase from the current capacity of 4 to 12 simultaneous births.

Available birthing beds and theaters will see an increase from 2 to 9 2 to 3 respectively. There would be an increase from the current capacity from 4 to 12 simultaneous births.
Cots and incubators would shoot up simultaneously from the existing situation where 4 infants shared a cot, breeding cross-contamination, and cross infection.
More so, 120 cots and up to 20 incubators are being provided to ensure single cot or incubator per infant, reducing cross contamination.
The new KATH Mother and Baby Unit will house the Maternity, Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care units. The new facility will provide the staff and patients adequate space for different types of procedures.
This facility had lacked the capacity to cater for patients referred to Ghana’s second-largest hospital and the only teaching hospital in the Ashanti region. But all this will be a thing of the past once the new building is commissioned.
Wife of the the President, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo on 29th May, 2017, cut sod for the construction of a new mother and child care unit – a 1,500 square metre one storey building, at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The gesture came after the First Lady’s attention was drawn to the life threatening conditions existing at the Kumasi hospital in an expository documentary by Joy News’ Seth Kwame Boateng titled “Next to Die”.
At the time, KATH which is second largest referral health facility in Ghana boasts only of eight beds and two delivery beds at the labour ward, two but only one functional theatre at the maternity block, 24 baby cots at the nursery unit.
Mrs Rebecca in collaboration with Multimedia Group, had earlier launched a campaign tagged “Save A Child, Save A Mother, #SaveThemNow”, which is solely directed at raising funds and facilities for the KATH maternity and child care project.
