National Security Asked To Shutdown Unaccredited Tertiary Institutions

A former President of the Private Universities Students Association of Ghana (PUSAG), Benjamin Panlogo-Logodam, has asked the National Security to investigate and close down all unaccredited tertiary institutions operating in the country.

These institutions, he said, were churning out “half-baked students” who are unable to gain employment after completion; something he observed has contributed to the level of employment in Ghana.

The National Accreditation Board (NAB) has listed on its website, 46 local and two foreign tertiary institutions in Ghana as not having the requisite accreditation to run and issue academic or professional certificates.

“Neither the institutions nor their programmes are accredited by the National Accreditation Board,” it said on its website.

A statement issued by Mr. Panlogo-Logodam in reaction to the NAB publication urged the National Security to show interest in the issue.

“The government of Ghana should take this issue up…NAB is telling us those institutions are fake and these students are unemployable. No wonder we have the huge number of unemployed graduates in the country,” he advised.

He underscored on the need for the Ministry of Education to ensure that these mushroom schools were closed down in order to restore sanity into the education sector.

“The government should take the issue up through the Ministry of Education…Prof. Kwasi Yankah is there, he has been in the system , he has fought for the system and now he is in charge of the system” he said.

He has meanwhile advised parents and those seeking admission into tertiary institutions to check if the institutions they were choosing are accredited or otherwise before they apply

Mr. Panlogo- Logodam also appealed to President Akufo-Addo to ensure that all private universities that have accreditation for the past 10 years, have own campuses and met the requirements of a charter, be granted university charter.

“I therefore call on the President, Nana Akufo Addo to look at these private universities who are due to charter but are being delayed through bureaucratic process of the NAB, to be issued with their charter.

He mentioned Methodist University College, Pentecost University College, All Nations University College, Ashesi University College and Catholic University College as some of the universities which should be considered.

“When these private universities are given the charter, other private universities can affiliate with them and then their operations cost will reduce; they can use monies that are for mentoring to expand and do other research work,” he noted.
