Officers from the MTTD hit the streets Wednesday to sensitize some commercial drivers in the Sekondi/ Takoradi Metropolis to adhere to traffic regulations this Easter season.

At a durbar in Takoradi on Wednesday, the Western regional director for MTTD, Chief Superintendent Richard Appiah said the move was part of proactive measures to assist drivers and other stakeholders on the need to stay within the traffic regulations.

“When Easter is approaching some of these drivers don’t comply with the rules, they abuse the road traffic regulations and as police and as law enforcement body we’re supposed to ensure that they comply with the rules,” he said.

He said during the period a lot of drivers over speed while a lot more do unnecessary overtaking with others overloading their vehicles.

Chief Superintendent Appiah said the police will haunt for drivers in the region who do not qualify to ply on the roads.

“Some people drive without licence; they’re not qualified to be on the roads but they keep coming to the roads thereby endangering themselves and other road users. We expect that this Easter passes off without road accident in the region,” he assured

The former National second trustee for GPRTU and chairman for Takoradi – Swedru GPRTU branch, Ben Kwesi Ansah lauded the sensitization exercise describing it as helpful.

He stated his branch hardly records accidents because the drivers receive timely traffic educational talks. He has thus urged other GPRTU branches in the region to emulate the practice.

“Because of our normal or the routine exercise that we do most of the times we don’t record accident during the year. I will urge other branches to emulate from what we’re doing…”
