The Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police has generated a total of GHC771, 469 from motorists across the country who flouted road and traffic regulations between January and July this year.
The amount, which has gone into the consolidated fund, was from court fines paid by offenders within the period, Head of Education, Research and Training at MTTD, DSP Alexander Obeng, revealed
Within the period, a total of 2,386 cases of road and traffic offences were recorded out of which 1,904 were taken to court after investigations. Of that, 1,534 motorists were found guilty, he told Accra-based Onua FM Friday.
He said eight motorists out of those found guilty were imprisoned, with the remaining attracting monetary fines.
Thirty-nine of the cases of were drunk driving, 104 were over speeding, while 54 cases of overloading were. Cases of vehicles with worn out tires recorded were 180.
Others included 532 cases of unlicensed vehicles, 609 cases of expired documents, 171 cases of vehicles without, 221 cases of motor cyclists without helmet and 383 cases of broken down vehicles on the road.
DSP Obeng gave the statistics while commenting on the controversial mandatory towing levy that currently hangs in the balance following public protest.
He expressed satisfaction at the performance of the MTTD for the first quarter.
