The books, which comprises of various subject reading books, novels, dictionaries, among others were to provide the children a variety of areas to read around and help develop their reading skills.

Mr Joseph Dogbe, Senior Manager, Business Risk, MTN, said the initiative which was in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to give back to the society every year. He said MTN over the years had developed interest in the education sector, and as such this year their major objective as a company was to focus on the importance of reading among basic school pupils.

“We at MTN believe that if children develop the habit of reading at the very early stages of their education, it would become part of them and they would grow to become very brilliant students, since reading would sharpen their minds and make them smart students as well.” There was the notion that Ghanaians do not have the habit of reading, but we would make sure this project is sustainable into the future, by putting a programme in place to inspire the children to derive maximum benefit from books, he noted.

Mr Dogbe expressed the hope that the book would be used for its intended purposes, so that the children in the school would derive maximum benefit from them.

The schools that benefitted from the books included Kwashieman 1 Basic, Kwashieman 2 Primary and KG, Kwashieman Anglican Primary A and B, St Luke KG, Prince of Peace Catholic and McCarthy Hill Basic Schools.

Mr Korletey Michael, Head Teacher of Kwashieman 1 Basic School, expressed appreciation to MTN for the support, saying that it was going to help compliment what the school already has. He said it would go a long way to help the students, assuring that the books would be made available to the pupils at the school’s library, and they would ensure that the children make good use of them.

The Y’ello Care initiative is an annual staff volunteer programme that involves community services that runs across the MTN Group footprint from . It was instituted 10 years ago and has grown to become one of the key activities on the MTN calendar.

This Year’s programme on the theme: “Investing in Education for All” would give MTN staff another opportunity to brighten lives through work.
