MTN and Women in Tech Africa have launched a partnership that seeks to drive more women into technology and innovation.

To this end, the industry practitioners have hinted of plans to partner government in its agenda to develop the economy through technology and innovation.

They believe government could achieve its target if it taps into their experience and ideas with the allocation of the resources to solve society’s challenges.

The CEO of Edel Technologies, Ethel Cofie also explains that the collaboration should translate in the creation of jobs for the majority of Ghanaians.

Ethel also indicated that talks have already begun with government to intensify innovation in the country.

“So part of what we are doing is that we are having a rigorous application process, the best and innovative ideas will make it through to the boot camp. We are also in talks with the relevant ministry, the Accra digital Center as well as other arms of government to ensure that whatever innovation comes out of it the country as a whole will get the best out of it.”

Ms Ethel who is also the Founder of Women in Tech Africa shared the thoughts when she spoke to Citi Business News at the launch of the MTN Girl Code.

The MTN Girl Code is a collaboration between the MTN Ghana Foundation and Women in Tech Africa.

The initiative is to encourage young women to participate in coding and computer programming, thus increasing the number of females actively involved in the development of programmes and Apps.

Cynthia Lumor, the Director of the MTN Foundation who also spoke at the event explained the focus of the MTN Foundation to uplift people through the power of ICT.

“It is our hope that by training more women in the sector, the benefits of Apps development and ICT as a whole would be extended to the larger society, and that ultimately, it would improve the livelihood of people in communities across Ghana.”

She added “this project is aligned to MTN Ghana Foundation’s ambition to increase the participation of ladies in the MTN Apps Challenge from less than three percent currently to an appreciable percentage in the next three years”.

The maiden edition of the MTN Apps camp for girls is dubbed: “MTN Girl Code: Tech camp for ladies going places.”
