The woman’s child Stephen Otchere has been detained at KATH over her failure to foot the bills. The child was admitted to the Burns and Intensive Care Unit on July 8, 2017, and discharged on August 16, 2017.

However, he is still at the hospital due to lack of funds to settle the bills. Over GHC2, 000 has been spent already on bills since the little boy was admitted about a month ago.

Principal Nursing Officer of KATH, Madam Theresa Kwaah said the parents owe the hospital to the tune of GHC10,181.00. Unfortunately for the mother who is said to be unemployed, she cannot afford to service the bills.

She said she has so far spent about GHC2,000 and is pleading with churches, philanthropists, and institutions to assist her, to no avail.

Narrating how the accident happend, stephen’s mother said she had left a boling water to go pick something in her room, only to return and see her son scalded in burns.

I was boiling water in a silver on a coal pot, so I went to the room to pick something, by the time I returned, the water had poured on my son and he was wallowing in pain, she told Kumasi-based Abusua FM.

The helpless mother has called on Ghanaians to assist her in any way to get her son out of the hospital.

Following an expository report by Joy News’ Seth Kwame Boateng it became a known fact that the hospital in question is in dire need of financial assistance.

The hospital according to the report could only boast of f eight beds and two delivery beds at the labour ward, two but only one functional theatre at the maternity block, 24 baby cots at the nursery unit.

This pathetic shortfall brought about an untold level of maternity and baby deaths at the hospital due to congestion, contamination, cross infections and other numerous deplorable conditions.

The unfortunate predicament of the hospital was what led to First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo’s campaign #SaveThemNow aimed at revamping the poor state of maternity services at the hospital.

Mrs Rebecca in collaboration with Multimedia Group, had earlier launched a campaign tagged “Save A Child, Save A Mother, #SaveThemNow”, which is solely directed at raising funds and facilities for the KATH maternity and child care project.

The campaign which set out to raise an initial amount of GHC10m yielded a total of GH¢6,170,686.23 in cash and GH¢1,489,500 in 8/23/2017. Donations have also been made in kind from different citizens and organizations.
