The First Lady’s #SaveThemNow movement was inspired by a media documentation that exposed the deplorable and pathetic state of health care at the KATH maternity ward.

Founder and Leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission, Apostle Dr. Ing. Kwadwo Sarfo donated GHC500,000 towards the Rebecca Akufo-Addo’s KATH maternity and child care project.

Apostle Sarfo said the donation which was made in cash on Friday, August 11, is the church’s contribution to forestall needless mother and baby deaths at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Host of Peace Fm’s Morning Show, Kwami Sefa Kayi in July donated 2 incubators worth $20,000 to the KATH Maternity project. Sefa Kayi who is also the founder of the Kokrokoo Charity Foundation earlier pledged to make the donation during the launch of the “Save A Child, Save A Mother” fundraising in May.

Presenting the donation to the First Lady, Kwami Sefa disclosed that the two incubators add up to six others that had already been installed by his foundation under its ‘Project 100 Incubators’ initiative.

Mr. Kayi further explained that the donation forms part of the foundation’s ‘Giving Hope To Mothers, Keeping Children Alive’ campaign, which is aimed at raising funds to purchase and install 100 incubators at the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) of the various government health facilities across the country.

Kwami Sefa Kayi initiated the daunting $100 million-dollar 100 Incubators project back in 2014. So far, the initiative has seen to the installation of 9 incubators.

Wife of the President, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo on 29th May, 2017, cut sod for the construction of a new mother and child care unit – a 1,500 square metre one storey building, at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The gesture came after the First Lady’s attention was drawn to the life threatening conditions existing at the Kumasi hospital in an expository documentary by Joy News’ Seth Kwame Boateng titled “Next to Die”.

Prior to the exposé, KATH which is second largest referral health facility in Ghana boasts only of eight beds and two delivery beds at the labour ward, two but only one functional theatre at the maternity block, 24 baby cots at the nursery unit.

This pathetic shortfall brought about an untold level of maternity and baby deaths at the hospital due to congestion, contamination, cross infections and other numerous deplorable conditions. Click here to read more about KATH maternal and baby deaths.

Mrs Rebecca in collaboration with Multimedia Group, had earlier launched a campaign tagged “Save A Child, Save A Mother, #SaveThemNow”, which is solely directed at raising funds and facilities for the KATH maternity and child care project.

The campaign which set out to raise an initial amount of GHC10m yielded a total of GH¢6,170,686.23 in cash and GH¢1,489,500 in pledges in both Accra and Kumasi. In addition to cash, in-kind donations and pledges in form of cement, electrical cables, windows, pipes, baby cots, hospital beds and incubators were made.

Meanwhile, reports reveal that work on the project has been progressing steadily, with the building currently at lintel level. Donations have also continued to pour in towards the well-meaning gesture.
