Akosua Puni, wife of retired Ghanaian international footballer and former Chelsea star, Michael Essien, has been going through tough times since she became owner of Italian football Club Calcio Como FC.

Puni who bought the La Lega Pro club in March this year, has been going from bad to worse as far as financial management of Como FC is concerned, ranging from inability to pay the club’s staff and players to unpaid facility use fees.

Latest on the list of Akosua’s woes is news that her club has been declared bankrupt, a development that is currently keeping Como’s membership of the Italian Football Federation on the line.

Prior to the bankruptcy declaration, Como FC was demoted to Serie D – a sanction for delaying the salary payment of the club’s players and workers which still appears to be yet unpaid based on the latest development.

According to the court’s verdict, FC Como is bankrupt and will be subjected to seize being a member of the Italian Football Federation.

Meanwhile, Akosua is reported to be owing a whopping sum of €90,000 for using facilities at the Orsenigo’s sports center.

Calcio Como Fc is an over 100 years old Italian third division club founded in year 1970 and based in the city of Como, Italy.

The club however, started having a recurring issue of bankruptcy in recent times, having been cancelled from Italian professional football on the grounds of bankruptcy in the 2004-05 season.

It was after the club was once again declared bankrupt by its owners that it was auctioned to Michael Essien’s wife. Akosu Puni purchased it at an auction price of €237, 000, excluding the club’s brand and sports centre.

The record-breaking move made Essien’s wife the first Ghanaian to buy/own a European football club.

An official club statement, following Como’s purchase by Akosua revealed that the club’s name which used to be Calcio Como Fc has been renamed Football Club Como (FC Como Srl). It had also been revealed that the club will start pursuing a new goal of grooming young players and developing a fresh team.

However, it is apparent that the deep financial burdens and debt records of the club is still far from being totally cleared.
