Metro Mass Lawyers Chase NDC For Cash

Abena Osei May 12, 2017 4 min read

Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT) is on the heels of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the balance of the GH¢1.9 million debt the party owes the state transporter.

A Public Relations Officer of MMT, Bernice Akologo, told Kasapa FM in Accra that the state-owned company had referred the matter to the company’s solicitors because the NDC appeared to have disputed the total debt due.

She later confirmed that the party had paid GH¢410,000 out of the total debt – a fact corroborated by NDC National Organizer Kofi Adams on another network – Asempa FM.

Initial Agreement

Kofi Adams, who doubled as the Campaign Coordinator of John Dramani Mahama’s failed second presidential term bid, admitted entering into an agreement with the state transporter to supply buses to the party for the 2016 electioneering campaign.

He said the MMT later brought the NDC leadership bills without the accompanying details and he personally asked the company to go back and reconcile the figures.

“In the meantime, we paid GH¢410,000 and told them that after the reconciliation if the payment was in excess, they should revert to us and if we have to top up we will do it.

“They didn’t bring the details to us but brought a demand notice and we replied them, making reference to the meeting we had with them and even mentioned the names of the officers we had the meeting with,” Mr Adams recounted.

According to a pro forma invoice issued to the NDC after it had lost the general election on December 7, last year, a total amount of GH¢1.921,896.99 was supposed to be paid to the state transport company by the then governing party.

The original amount for using the 506 buses was GH¢2.402,371.24, but the NDC was given an invoice of GH¢1.921,896.99 as a result of a 20% discount.

In the heat of the confusion, a member of the NDC communications team said Kofi Adams should be made to personally pay the debt because it had nothing to do with the NDC as a party.

He claimed Kofi Adams was disrespectful toward some of the party’s members and was making things difficult for the NDC.

Breakdown

In the invoice, Metro Mass gave details of the locations that all the 506 buses were distributed. The buses were used to ferry party supporters to their voting centres across the country which still came with a defeat, making it difficult for the NDC to offset the bill.

Cape Coast had 22 buses at a total cost of GH¢105,950.00 and a 20% discount of GH¢84,760.00, while Wa and Koforidua had 11 each with GH¢60,977.80 for Wa and GH¢50,600.00 for Koforidua and a 20% discount of GH¢48,782.24 and GH¢40,480.00 respectively.
