Meet Enyonam: Armless Woman Who Inspires Society

Enyonam Louisa Esi is a woman living with disability at Amanfrohene at Otoase in the Eastern region of Ghana, who has risen beyond her disability to put smiles on the faces of many.

She has no upper limbs and depends heavily on her lower limbs which unfortunately are not well developed. Regardless, she pursues her daily activities with joy. For her, disability is not inability.

It was her dream to become a lawyer, but she is currently a teacher having served for 28 years already.

She teaches children who are on admission at the National Catholic Health Service Orthopedic Training Centre at Adoagyiri, near Nsawam. She was re-posted from the Adoagyiri catholic school where she had been teaching for 17yrs.

This is her sixth month with these children but she is already a source of inspiration to them.

On a typical day, Enyonam takes her two biological and one adopted sons to school before heading straight to the market to buy food items needed for super.

After giving up on her dream of becoming a lawyer due to certain challenges and factors, Enyonam is worried that the next generation of persons with disability will be more deprived.

She laments how persons with disability are denied access to so many public places and the high level of insecurity they encounter.

As Ghana joins the rest of the world to celebrate this year’s international women’s day, we bring to you the story of armless Enyonam Louisa Ayisi who has braced all odds to make an impact wherever she finds herself.
