The Major Mahama Trust Bill 2017 was laid and read for the first time in Parliament on Tuesday, October 24, 2017.
The objective of the Bill is to cater adequately for the wife and children of Major Maxwell Mahama, an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces, who was lynched by a mob at Denkyira Obuasi in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region on Monday 29th May 2017, while on detachment duty.
The President of the Republic of Ghana and Commander-in- Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, subsequent to the death, announced a GH¢500,000 trust fund from the state for the wife and children of the deceased army Major. The Defence Minister was expected to chair the committee of trustees for the fund.
The Bill is also to give effect to president’s vision and commitment towards the welfare of the deceased soldier’s young widow, Mrs. Barbara Mahama and his infant children, Jaden Mahama and Jeremiah Boressah Mahama.
According to government, it has become necessary to draft this bill considering the circumstances under which the officer died while on a national duty.
The Bill just as any other important bill will have to go through the usual and normal processes per the rules of Parliament till it gets to a consideration stage before passage.
Parliament has said the setting of the Trust Fund will guarantee that the proceeds of the Trust Fund are properly managed to the benefit of the beneficiaries.
