Tamale Stadium -The 21,000 capacity Tamale Sports Stadium in the Northern region is set to be named after late Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama. This will be in commemoration of the 5th anniversary of his death.
President Akufo-Addo president announced at the Flagstaff House Monday that he will confer with the Sports minister and issue an executive instrument effecting the change by November 16, which marks the 6th anniversary of the demise of the late Vice President.

This was after the family visited the President to inform him of the impending 6th anniversary of the death of their kinsman.
This is also in fulfillment of a promise made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the heat of the 2016 campaigns to honor the late Vice President with the renaming of the facility.
The Tamale Sports Stadium was constructed to give the people of the Northern Region a good feel of football thrill associated with the various national teams most especially the Black Stars and other sporting activities.
The fuss about erecting the US$20 million multipurpose Tamale Stadium started in 2006 ahead of the 2008 African Cup of Nations which Ghana was the host nation. Alhaji Aliu Mahama who was the Vice President at the time observed that it was apt the region benefited from the facility.
The late vice president to former President John Kufuor was known for his commitment and campaign against social indiscipline.
One of the major reasons for the construction of the Tamale Stadium was to give the people of the Northern Region a good feel of football thrill associated with the various national teams most especially the Black Stars and other sporting activities.
The 6th anniversary will now see the long-lasted argument become a reality as the President has said.
Alhaji Aliu Mahama was born on March 3, 1946, at Yendi in the Northern Region of Ghana. As a young man, he studied at the Government Secondary School, Tamale from 1960-67 for his Ordinary and Advanced Level Certificates.
He proceeded to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi from 1967-71 where he obtained a BSc in Building Technology.
Alhaji Aliu Mahama started his working career at the Bolgatanga regional office of the State Construction Corporation as an Engineer from 1972 -75. He was promoted to Assistant Regional Manager and posted to the Koforidua regional office of the Corporation from 1975-76.
He held the position of Regional Manager in charge of the Northern Region, Tamale from June 1976 – August 1982. In 1982 he successfully established his own Civil Engineering and general construction firm, LIDRA Limited and became its Managing Director.
