Kwesi Appiah Breaks Silence Following Raging Controversy

Ayew brothers’ snub -Black Stars Coach Kwesi Appiah has attempted to clear the air on the growing controversy surrounding his withdrawal of the Ayew brothers from the Uganda World Cup qualifier.

Debunking the common notion, Coach Appiah has dismissed suggestions that Andre and Jordan Ayew were excluded from his recent squad as a punishment for failing to travel to Congo last month for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

He has stated that his decision to leave the Ayew brothers out of the squad to face Uganda had nothing to do with their absence from last month’s World Cup qualifier against Congo.

Kwesi Appiah announced his 26-man provisional squad for the clash against Uganda in Kampala next week without Jordan and Andre Ayew.

Appiah’s move has sparked a huge debate with reports suggesting he omitted the duo because they did not honor the return leg against Congo in Brazzaville.

West Ham United star Andre claimed he had suffered an injury after the first leg in Kumasi and withdrew from the squad to Brazzaville.

His younger brother Jordan of Swansea City also ejected himself from the squad after claiming he had food poisoning.

The brothers were accused of malingering and that Appiah snubbed them because of that.

However, the Black Stars Coach has said that the Ayew brothers’ snub had nothing to do with their Brazzaville absence. Kwesi Appiah said the brothers were removed to give other players a chance to prove themselves to the nation.

Coach Appiah’s withdrawal of the Ayew brothers from the Uganda squad has also earned him the distaste of a group of Tamale football lovers who have accused him of sidelining players from the north.

Asides from the Ayew brother’s snub, Mubarak Wakaso, and Abdul Majeed Waris have also not been called up since Appiah returned for a second spell.

This caused the group to release a statement calling on the GFA, Black Stars management committee and government to take a look at the issue surrounding the call-up of players into the national team.
