Students in Kumasi are not happy with the fact that they have to sit at home as a result of the final funeral rites of the late Queen Mother, the Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem II which is underway in the Ashanti Kingdom.

Schools in Kumasi and the surrounding metropolis were all closed today [Monday, December 4] as part of the observations for the late Asantehemaa’s final burial rites. In a similar vein, schools in the area will dismiss earlier on Friday, December 8 for the same purpose.

In a statement released by the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and copied to Citifmoline.com, all day students in the Kumasi and the Asokore Mampong Municipality in the Ashanti Region were instructed to remain at home.

“We wish to inform residents in Kumasi Metro, Asokore Mampong Municipal and the general public that activities being held for the final funeral rites of the late queen mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem 11, demand that Basic schools within these areas be closed down on Monday 4th December 2017. On Friday 8th December, 2017, schools will closed at 12 noon to enable students to reach home on time. Day students in the Senior High schools are also to stay at home within these two days,” the statement read.

However, some of the students reported to school on Monday and were asked to go back home. The students expressed displeasure over the development, pointing out that they did not get the information to remain at home.

Scheduled for today is a private ceremony wherein the Queen mother and other women in the Manhyia palace will parade from Manhyia to Adum and back amidst firing of musketry. On Friday, a fast which began on Sunday, 3rd December will end. Otumfuo is expected to distribute sheep, foodstuffs and firewood to mourners who have been fasting in the morning while consecration rites of the stool in memory of Late Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II will be held in the evening at Werempe.

Meanwhile, a recent report from Ghanaweb.com has it that schools will also not be open tomorrow, Tuesday, December 5.

It has not been forgotten, especially at the Manhyia Palace of the Ashanti Kingdom in Kumasi, that the Queen Mother, the Asantehemaa Nana Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem II departed this life about a year ago.

According to the tradition of the Ashanti Kingdom, Asantehemaa’s final funeral rites are carried out one year after her death. Recall that the Queen Mother died in November, 2016  and was buried in January, 2017 in a  four-day funeral filled with feasting and series of ceremonial activities.

The tradition also specifies that the Asantehemaa’s final funeral will be planned the succeeding Queen Mother together with the Otumfuo. The funeral Planning Committee has also released the programme of events for the late Queen Mother’s final rites which have placed some restrictions on Kumasi residents.
