Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Professor Joshua Alabi has called on the president to exercise utmost caution in handling a petition brought before him in an attempt to remove the chair of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) from office.
Some workers of the EC, under group Concerned Workers of the Electoral Commission, have accused Charlotte Osei of abuse of office and misconduct in the six-page petition to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
They accuse her, among others, of taking unilateral decisions and doing the bidding of the previous John Mahama-led government.
But a statement issued by Prof Alabi on Friday described the issue as “sensitive,” asking, therefore, that the balances are tilted in a way that will not endanger “our fledgling democracy”.
“Any attempt to undermine and disrupt the Commission will not serve any political party any good at this critical point in Ghana’s democracy,” the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart observed.
“There will be no winner but Ghana as a country will be the loser.”
He has asked President Akufo-Addo to handle the issue with the current political tension in the country in mind.
“Without discussing the merits or demerits of the petition, I wish to call on the President and all those in positions of authority, to balance the sensitivity of the issue with the current state of political tension and suspicions in this country to safe guard the peace Ghana has enjoyed and should continue to enjoy.”
