Reports have it that the 26-year-old was attacked in the capital’s upmarket suburb of Cocody. The killers reportedly tried to steal Griffiths’ Mercedes 4×4 and shot the striker when he refused to hand it over.

The young striker was immediately rushed to a hospital, however, doctors were not able to save him. The culprits of the crime are currently at large but the police have since begun investigations.

Winning three caps for the Ivory Coast’s Under-23 side in 2011, the late Ivorian striker was once tipped to become a new Didier Drogba -the Iconic footballer from the same country.

Georges Griffiths had a spell on loan from Sirocco to Sparta Prague before Hungarian outfit Lombard-Papa signed him in 2013. He joined their rivals Diosgyor a year later and spent three seasons with them. In 34 appearances for the club, he scored eight times.

This is the second death in Ivorian football since the start of 2017. It can be recalled that the country also lost former Newcastle Player Cheick Tiote earlier in June 2017.

30-year-old Tiote who was a member of the Elephants squad that won the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, died on Monday, June 5, 2017, after he collapsed while training with his club, Beijing Enterprises. He was reported to have died of heart failure.
