There was grumbling and agitation in some schools in the Kumasi Metropolitan Area when the Coordinating Director led some staff of the Assembly and the Metro Director of Education to visit exam centres on Monday, June 5, 2017.

Some teachers, serving as invigilators at the Angel Educational Complex and Asanteman Senior High School, which are, among the centres for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), complained of how they had not received their allowances for two years.

Threatening to do the work anyhow, the group asked which state official had not received his or her allowances or even ex gratia for the past two years.

The agitation came up when the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Mr. Michael Ataogye, in the company of some staff of the Assembly and the Metro Education Director went to these centres as part of their tour in some examination centres in the metropolis.

But the Metro Educational Director, Mr. Alex Atta-Asante, promised to ensure the grievances of the invigilators would be attended to by the Ghana Education Service (GES).

According to him, it was not the best that invigilators were owed two years of allowances, adding it is  something that must be dealt with immediately to restore calm .

The Metro Director of Education however expressed satisfaction at the turn of events at the exams centres.

He was hopeful that with the arrival of exams materials on time coupled with the good preparations of the candidates, this year’s BECE would be smooth.

The Coordinating Director encouraged the candidates to do well to get good grades so as to make their admission into the Senior High School (SHS) easy.

A total of 93,570 candidates are sitting for the BECE this year in the Ashanti Region.

Out of the number, 22, 840 are from schools within the Kumasi Metropolis.

The KMA schools are made up of public and private schools, with 339 private schools making a total of 8,526 candidates.
