I’ll Close Down School If…

Headmaster of Gomoa Techiman D/A Primary School in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region, Mr. John Kwaku Amu, has threatened to close down the school, following several failed efforts to get the school renovated.

The dilapidated school structure built in the late 1950s has seen no renovation since its construction making it a death trap to school pupils and teachers alike.

The structure has been immensely eaten away by erosion with deep cracks glaring on every side and corner of the building while the roofing has been pathetically ripped-off due to bad leakage anytime it rained.

Consequently, the headmaster gave Ghana Education Service (GES) two weeks to address the problem or he will be left with no option than to shut the school down to save the lives of the innocent school pupils.

Putting his concerns across through a media interview over the weekend, Mr. Amu noted that he has made several attempts through the circuit education supervisor, district education directorate, district assembly as well as chiefs in the area to assist in putting the school in good shape but all to no avail.

“I don’t want what happened in Jamara to happen to our kids so I have finally resolved to close it down until help comes our way because I don’t want to be blamed,  should anything untoward happen,” he pointed out.

Mr. Amu disclosed that the building can cave in anytime, adding that the classrooms badly affected are Kindergarten to Class Three.

“Why should we put the lives of these innocent children at risk when help can be extended? Do we want to see the unfortunate happen before we take the right move?, he cautioned.

The headmaster stated that it is the only school in the community with a population of 191, adding that anytime it rains they either have to send the children home or merge the two Kindergartens and Class One pupils in one class to keep them safe.

“When this happens some of the kids have to sit on the floor because the desks are not enough,” he lamented.

He, therefore, called on government to urgently come to their aid and help salvage the situation and keep the children in school.
