President Nana Addo has admitted his government’s efforts at ensuring gender parity has been quite poor.

The President made this admission while responding to a question on specific decisions he had taken to merit the African Union (AU) Gender Champion title recently conferred on him.

He received the award from United National Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) a few weeks ago at the opening ceremony of the 29th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Afric, which  took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

But some critics who believe the President has not done much to show his commitment to gender parity have questioned the move.

The President, in a rebuttal to these concerns indicated that his government will do more to ensure gender parity.

“…This is an area I want to do better. I have not been able to reach the 30% bench mark for appointment of women in my government. Chief of Staff is a woman, Secretary of the Cabinet is a woman and there are others as well but nevertheless I think that much more work has to be done my me. Hopefully the award was meant to inspire me to work better and stronger in this area.”

President Akufo-Addo after taking office on January 7, 2017 appointed 36 women for the position of Metropolitan Municipal and District Chief Executives.

He also appointed nine women for ministerial roles.

Akufo-Addo’s Chief of Staff as well as the newly appointed Chief Justice of Ghana are all women.
