The health outfit is indeed alarmed at the large quantity and has described this development as unacceptable. Dozens of the expired products were hauled out in boxes from an overcrowded mini store in the hospital under the watch of some officials from the FDA.

Some of the drugs which the facility disposed of included a large number of anesthesia drugs which stirred controversy after some nurses refused anesthesia services claiming authorities had supplied them with expired anesthesia drugs.

This according to the Northern regional boss of the FDA Mr. Martin Kusi, is the first time in 10 years the facility is disposing of nearly GH¢400,000.00 worth of expired drugs since its upgrade in 2009.

It was indeed a hectic task for the team that saw to the successful disposal of the expired drugs at Tamale Hospital.

Officials said they had hectic moment taking inventory due to the huge quantity of the spoilt drugs locked up in the store shared by officials of the oxygen unit as an office.

Mr. Martin Kusi cautioned as well as advised the hospital management to dispose of expired drugs periodically to avoid it amounting to such huge numbers.

In the actual sense, drugs which have exceeded their expiry dates are destroyed and discarded to avoid being mistaken for good ones by amateurs. But in this case, the management had kept them away in the same hospital.

The FDA Northern regional boss said that at least, every year a hospital should do safe disposal. Mr. Kusi said that is outfit will from now onwards, ensure that the hospital is monitored periodically to make sure that every expired product is safely disposed of.

In June 2017, the FDA office in the Northern Region had commenced investigations into allegations that authorities at the Tamale Teaching Hospital have been administering expired drugs.

Although the drugs administration allegations have not been confirmed, the indisputable fact remains that the hospital has lots of expired drugs in their possession.
