The annual mandatory towing levy has been suspended by government, 3news.com can confirm.
The Legislative Instrument 2180 was passed in 2012 but given a five-year maturation period for implementation.
It was scheduled to be implemented from July 1, 2017 with commercial and non-commercial vehicles expected to pay between GH¢20 and GH¢200 as levy.
But before full implementation, it has already generated controversy as transport operators kicked against the levy with a group like the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) petitioning the president, for instance.
Speaking on TV3’s Business Focus on Monday, Deputy Minister of Transport Daniel Nii Kwatei Titus Glover said government has pulled the plugs on the policy.
He said the decision was taken “last week” in response to “the outcry of the general public especially vehicle owners”.
