Gov’t Has Lost Moral Right & Authority To Investigate EC

The Member of Parliament for Adaklu Constituency in the Volta Region says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government does not have the moral right and authority to investigate the alleged rot at the Electoral Commission (EC).

Kwame Governs Agbodza said there have been equally serious allegations against various government agencies since President Akuffo Addo took office but the government has failed to investigate so there is no need for government to come in and either investigate the EC or take the EC boss to court.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP was contributing to the alleged rot at the EC in which the Chairperson, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, is being accused by some concern staff of the Electoral Commission.

Mrs. Osei is billed to answer questions on the fees charged journalist to cover the 2016 elections but there are strong indications some MP’s would want her to comment on the happenings at the EC when she gets on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday.

Mr. Governs Agbodza told TV3’s New Day Host, Bright Nana Amfoh that “the NPP government has no moral authority to question what is happening at the EC. What happened at BOST is equally to be investigated but the government stepped in to halt the investigations. When people dirtied themselves in the oil deal they failed to investigate”.

The MP added that “the army worm chemical procurement was done fraudulently. It was not done properly and they are now trying to regularize the procurement processes after they bought it dubiously, and it even failed to work”.

He explained that “NPP never wanted her [EC Boss] to succeed. Sending this issue to court is a misplace priority because every government agency makes mistakes, but when the mistake happens, it is the procedure that will be used to unravel which is important”.

The Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore Constituency Ashanti Region, Nana Ayew Afriye, said the EC Boss and the NDC party erred by commenting on the issue.

“She should not have reacted. She should have kept quiet over it”, he explained.

The MP said the government is not saying the EC boss should be prosecuted but the NPP are saying the authorities should look into the issue to find out the truth or otherwise about the allegations.
