Ghana’s High Commissioner To South Africa Chided Over Partisan Comments

Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa may be needing more than words to win back the people’s trust and loyalty.

The High Commissioner Ayisi-Boateng was reported to have said that prioritizing NPP members ahead of other Ghanaians is the right thing to do because the struggles of party supporters and loyalists won the NPP the 2016 elections.

According to him, the “more Ghanaian” people, loyalists of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), must have their interests prioritized by all government appointees.

In clearer terms, Ayisi-Boateng is of the view that supporters of the ruling NPP should be treated better than others since they (NPP supporters) were loyal to the party prior to their victory in the 2016 elections.

Mr Ayisi-Boateng made the comment when he spoke at a ceremony to usher in fresh students of Kumasi Technical University into the Tertiary Students Confederacy Network (TESCON) of the NPP on Sunday, October 29, 2017 in Kumasi.

He emphasized that the NPP made him whom he is today and for that reason, his topmost priority would be the problems of NPP supporters “before any other Ghanaian”

I told them when NDC was in power it was Kwesi Ahwoi who was there, now we are in power, so Ayisi-Boateng is here with you. My topmost priority is the problems of an NPP person before any other Ghanaian, take it or leave it

He went further to say that members of TESCON must be considered first in employment opportunities before others, adding that he would have done so if he had his way.

As you guessed, a massive backlash followed the partisan comments made by Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa who deemed secondary, the issues relating to Ghanaians in general.

No soothsayer was needed to interpret the glaring partisanship promoted by Ayasi-Boateng. From calls for a resignation, an apology, to a sack, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa has been on the receiving end of intense criticisms from different political stakeholders.

The Minority Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa called on President Akufo-Addo to sack the High Commissioner over the comment which he said is shameful and undeserving of a diplomat of the country.

Ablakwa who spoke on Eyewitness News explained that the ideal and most honorable thing the High Commissioner should do is to resign and apologize to Ghanaians for his comments.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa George Ayisi-Boateng has said he sees nothing wrong with his comment that members of the NPP are more Ghanaian than others.

The diplomat has maintained his stand on his priority to help members of his party first before any other Ghanaian. The high commissioner says he said nothing wrong and that he is not a divisive person as people are portraying him to be.

According to him, the criticisms are unfounded because he has helped members of the other political divide in diverse ways. His detractors he said, are only resorting to cheap politics to score points.
