The yet-to-be rolled out initiative is expected to provide a lasting solution to illegal mining in the country, popularly known as galamsey.

Project coordinator, Dr. Isaac Bonsu- Karikari revealed this to tv3 news during a national stakeholders workshop at Tarkwa on how to control illegal mining in Ghana.

After the validation workshop, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is expected to review and come out with the final document for the president to launch the project for implantation to begin.

“We don’t know whether after the validation the amount will go up… We are expecting about 30million dollars from the government and we think that development partners must take about 50%; that is about 75 million dollars,” he said.

He added: “we going to have PPP arrangements and other fundraising activities”.

The sector minister, Peter Amewu, said the ministry has identified areas where they are going to start reclamation of destroyed lands.

He explained that mercury content is very high at those places, yet Ghana does not have a mercury policy.

To this end, he said international standards will be adopted for the site to be reclaimed.

“If you go to around the kyibi area, you will see that they are planting red flags, blue flags, green flags to indicate places for reclamation and not… we have spoken to the small scale association and they are going to play a key role.” He said

The workshop has attracted traditional authorities, MPs, civil society organisations among other groups.
