President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed that three weeks ago, highly enriched Uranium from China had to be flown back because it was contraband in Ghana.
He said that gesture symbolizes the commitment of the government to rid Ghana of such materials.
World super-powers are teetering on the brink of a crossfire as North Korea has consistently defied orders not to produce nuclear weapons.
Leader Kim Jong-un has said he is unfazed by sanctions from the UN and will produce more of the weapons if the sanctions are slapped at him.
This has led to tension between the US, on one hand, and allies of North Korea on the other hand.
During his maiden address to the UN General Assembly on Thursday, President Akufo-Addo said it should be the collective interest of all if the world is to become free of nuclear weapons.
Ghana’s leader cited some measures taken to achieve this resolve in his country.
“Our nuclear reactor has subsequently been converted to use more enriched fuel to power generation.”
He expressed Ghana’s commitment to remain friends to all peoples of the world and play its role in the comity of nations.
“Mr President, I wish to reaffirm my country’s commitment to maintain friendy and cordial relations with all the countries and peoples of the world.”
