The Ghana Premier League could be on hold for up to a month to make way for local CHAN qualifiers, the WAFU championships and allow Kumasi Asante Kotoko recover fully from their recent accident.

The league is already due to go on break this weekend for the MTN FA Cup but it is highly unlikely to be back next weekend according to its communications with Communication Director of the Premier League Board (PLB), Tamimu Issah has hinted that the Ghana Premier league (GPL) is likely to go on a recess for almost a month.

In an interview with TV3 Sports, he made it clear that this decision could be possible due to several reasons

“There have been proposal for the postponement of the league this as a result of several reasons; with kotoko the medical reports shows that there are not fit to play the league matches, already this week we are not playing any league match”.

“Local Black Stars have to play a CHAN qualifier with Burkina Faso over two legs and the management of the team presented a proposal that they will need one week to prepare ahead of the first leg, so the one week in addition to the first leg and the second leg will be two weeks, so it sums up to three weeks, this is the proposal the board will meet and take a decision on it “

The break is likely to upset those who have long argue that there the league does not generate consistency on front to make it attractive enough and Issah admits that.

“The excitement of the league will surely be affected, the league has become interesting and this proposed break can affect the enthusiasm of the league. Breaking for a month certainly will be big blow, now that we are playing the league the European teams are on break, this brought a lot of attention on our local league, so breaking and resuming at a time the European league is starting is a disadvantage, but it is clear our league is about to end so we are hopeful that stimulation of the league will be restored as teams battle for better positions on the league log”.

Whatever happens though, Issah is feels this campaign has been a huge credit to the quality of the Ghana league.

“The league has been very competitive,” he said. “When the season begun, no one gave WAFA any opportunity that with six games to go they will be on top of the league, I don’t think a lot of people considered them as favourite to win the league.

They have been on top for so long, the mid table position has been very challenging, teams do not stay at one place for so long ,no one can tell which team will be relegated”.
